Go to the united states passport site. There is a lot of useful information on that site. I put the link below. they have lists of areas to be aware of. And how to deal with foreign laws. (Americans are not protected by American laws when abroad)
they even tell you that it is illegal in some modern day countries for women to travel alone, or that no one other than your husband is allowed to enter your hotel room.

1. Get a visa (and ticket etc).
2. Pack necessary clothes.
3. A pocket dictionary, if you are not well-verse in the language of that country.
4. Have enough money for the duration of your stay (or they will deport you).
